For the first time, athletes who win a gold medal in athletics events at the Paris Olympics — which will be held between July 26 and August 11 — will receive financial recognition from World Athletics, the international athletics federation.
The entity will distribute to the winners 2.4 million dollars (12.3 million reais), approximately 50 thousand dollars (256.5 thousand reais) to each gold medalist of the 48 athletics events held. In the case of collective races, the winning athletes will share the prize.
The decision breaks with a traditional practice of federations, that of not awarding prize money, recommended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which defends that taking part in the Olympic Games is already the big prize.
According to World Athletics, the expectation is that at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, all medalists in athletics events will receive a financial reward.
Unlike other federations, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) already grants an award to the country’s greatest athletes.
In Paris, the COB will financially reward all Brazilian medalists, independent of the sport.
Individual events | Group events (2 to 6 athletes) | Collective events (+7 athletes) | |
Gold | 350 thousand | 700 thousand | 1,05 million |
Silver | 210 thousand | 420 thousand | 630 thousand |
Bronze | 140 thousand | 280 thousand | 420 thousand |
